There was once a world, eons past in relativity. Unique. Special. It had its own flaws and perceptions, but what it was, for one thing, was balanced. Balance is a rare thing, if you can consider something rare when there are infinite examples of it. But this world did have balance, and not just a balance that is the product of hard work and commitment, however as fleeting as the lives of those who strove to achieve it. This balance was lasting. It was the balance that was imbued into the hearts of the beings who lived it.
The balance was maintained by a select group. No being is physically immortal, and so mortal beings bore the task of maintaining balance. Each generation bore offspring that would take up the mantle and tasks of a protector and regulator. A regulator for each aspect of life and death.
Each protector took on the form of the mind-set of the times. And the times changed.
The protector of the living, an angel in solid form. He or she bore feathered wings and a magic of light and purity, but was more mortal than even your common man. When man was feeling mortal and frail, he or she would manifest in glowing white light and a halo. When man felt invincible, unstoppable, the protector manifested as a warrior, strong and true.
The protector of technology. Although the inhabitants of this world were not human, they were very close to being so, almost to a point where they were indistinguishable. This being so, there came a time where these people learned to create. They created to progenate and created to annihilate. This form of almost-magic was called technology. The protector bore the clad of the period. A suit of armour, leather garbs and rock, loincloth and spear, this became the appearance of the protector.
The protector of nature. Nature changed with man and served its purpose either alongside or against this humanity. Whichever the case, this humanity was kept from destroying the nature that was most in danger. If it was forests that were being cut by the acre, the forests were alive with the will of the protector. If it was a species on the brink of in-existence, the protector took on the form of such a beast.
The protector of the unnatural. He or she took on a form with mixed influence from life and technology, a bridge between the two that connected when and where it pleased. It took on the form of artificial life. Anything that threatened the balance between the two was shielded by this protector. Creatures from another world or creatures from another time. Or when man went too far and meddled in affairs that were not meant to be.
The protector of emotion. Without balance, a trait unique to a species can become its downfall. A lord of emotion was set within the hearts of man, staying dangerous love and curbing uncontrollable hate. When hate was in the form directed to oneself, the protector took the form of a revelation, an internal call to realize that you are you, what you have become and your potential to become, because of both others and yourself. The push that was needed out of the night and into dawn. When love became a passion that drove violence, the protector came in the form of tears. Tears to stay the hand that would strike a neighbour, and tears to help let go and set free true love into a form that spread it to those who truly needed it.
The protector of the dead. The watchful eye in the planes of oblivion and the regulator of the balance of energy that flowed and connected all life, always equipped with the magic to wake those from their sleep or put weary souls to a slumber.
