It was a rainy, dark Thursday evening. I was exhausted after finally completing the last exam of the week, and all that I wanted to do was relax. I decided to unwind by playing video games, all the while chatting and laughing to myself, with myself.772Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡHYk0H2Ogme
I heard the front door slide open downstairs, and I thought to myself that my father had finally arrived home, but i was too engaged to change my priorities and kept playing. Around ten minutes later, I thought that the house was strangely quiet. My father's girlfriend was home and i had not heard her greetings. I noticed the sound of footsteps scaling the staircase; loud and heavy. They did not sound like my father's or his intimate, but perhaps my dad was wearing different shoes on account of the rain.772Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡB5373z9TFU
As the door to my room opened, I chirped out a warm "Hello there" accompanied by a wide grin, as though my father had come to say hello. But what greeted me in return was the cold steel of a gun barrel.
The man who had entered the room, announced only by a tool of death, was twice my size. Even through his mangy black balaclava I could see the shock on his face in recoil of my greeting. He warily strode up to me, grabbed me by the collar and pressed the gun to my head. In a deep, commanding voice, he instructed: "Get up. Now. Come with me and I will not hurt you."
My body moved on its own. I had no control.
He led me to the main bedroom next door to mine ans as I walked in I saw, to my horror, my father's girlfriend sitting on the floor, back pressed against the bed. Her face seemed calm, but her eyes were a flurry. In the background another man was looking for all of the jewelry in the bedroom. I was planted next to my dad's companion, wrists tied tightly behind my back with duct tape, gun pointed towards our noses. I glanced towards my father's girlfriend to console her, touching her knee. She was trembling violently. I shook off the urge to start quivering with her.
Some relief came when I peeked through the crack of the open door to see my father being led up the staircase with a knife pressed against his back. I sighed cautiously. Everyone was okay, at least for now. Sitting there, on the frozen floor, thinking of all the gruesome possibilities must have been the longest thirty minutes of my life.772Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡzoEJWxbVV2
Eventually, when the cry of rubber signaled the intruders departure, I painfully stretched the tape so that I was able to reach the scissors kept in the bathroom. The rest of the household was also tied, ankle, wrist and mouth, hidden by a heavy duvet. The rest of the evening would entail answering repetitive questions and drowning in a profound sense of tire. As a last thought before I drifted off, sitting straight up against the wall by my bed, I remember thinking: "From tonight onwards, I can sleep forever."
I know, it seems rather melodramatic, but schools, just like readers, reward relatable pain. It should have been expected, seeing as my dad comes home with a bag full of gold and diamonds from god knows where. (It makes me think back to my days as a toddler being escorted by burly bodyguards. Man, I still remember one of them, Jackie, who was my coolest friend. He let me play games on his old-school Nokia.)
