Zena always had a sense of justice, wanted to be a journalist and so has worked with Cold Daily for 6 years. Getting this job was not easy as there were many in the zone who could at least read and write. The world was reeling, there were more hard labor jobs which no one wanted. She was different, hard labor was not for her, so she taught herself to read and write. Before her 18th birthday, she landed this job and 6 years since she had been fighting against the corrupt authority in her own ways.
"John, Gods Mercy hanged a 13 years old boy for a piece of bread, we need to get it out", Zena said, out of breath as she stormed into his office.
"No, we can't, they control this area", John, 58 years old, replied, he was the chief editor of Cold daily, the only newspaper of Cold field, a 100 sq miles of area which was administered by Lord Greed and his group 'The Watchers of God' by the command of 'The Gods Mercy'.
"This newspaper is the only surviving media in this zone. we are obliged to tell the truth."
"And the truth is - that boy stole rationed food despite knowing fully well how scarce food and water is in today's world. I know you sympathize with him - I do, but we cannot print what you want, not if we want to stay alive", John explained, motioning with his hands, "and already we are in trouble due to your last antics - I can't have one more!"
"So you are scared that those fanatics - The Gods Mercy and their Goons, The Watchers of God, will shut your print and kill you?", She questioned.
"Please don't call them fanatics! You will be in big trouble if they hear it.", he said while looking around, "Even The Watchers don't dare go against them, they are the rulers here, we work because they fund us. They help watchers man the walls and protect us from God knows what lies outside those walls so that your ass can sleep soundly at night", John continued, "You don't know the horrors of war and what follows it, Its been 40 years since the war, everything was in ruin after the war - everything! People killed each other to barely survive, it was insane. Then, like many others, this safe zone was created. Many of those fell due to internal strife and struggles but this one remained afloat. It grew with time and remained intact, all thanks to them and the walls they built around. They have controlled this area from the very beginning, keeping the public in check and rebuilt this society. We can't go against them for pesky reasons", John finished.
"Maybe They rebuilt this society but now are committing heinous crimes in the name of God which needs to stop. I may never understand the horrors of war and what you had to go through during those times", She paused and leaned forward on the table, "but it has made you apathetic, there was no need to kill that boy", She finished and stormed out of the room not waiting for the reply. She knew that he won't budge.
"There is no justice in this world", She thought to herself while walking back to her desk.
The next morning, a corpse was found hanging on the same gallows where the boy was convicted and hanged. The corpse of the same man who ordered the boy's punishment the other day, the corpse of Saint Lest the V with a board around his neck which said:
"I, Saint Lest the V, Retainer of Cold field's Gods Mercy. Do hereby, By the Command of Her Majesty Avelon the Ist, Queen Regent of Gods Mercy and Lord Greed, Lord of the Watchers of the God at Cold Field, condemn myself to death!!
