It’s quiet, then it's not. Rain starts to fall, and it starts to rain harder, and harder. Almost like the gods are trying to crush me under the weight, even though the words I just heard have done just that.
“Goodbye, Nick.” Her hand slipped out of mine, leaving a fuzzy feeling, the heat from my hand fading as she walked away.
I start to walk away, towards the wooden clock tower– the place we met. I place a light hand on the wood, dragging my fingers across the grooves. Feeling the memories we made here, only to be burned to ash.
Ash.
Ash. What a wonderful word. I shake the thought from my head, no, this is why she’s gone– but what if?
No.
I close my eyes, shaking my head, rain still pelting the land. ‘When I open my eyes she’ll be right next to me… if not, then… I open my eyes, and spin around, looking around, hoping what just happened really was all in my head, but it wasn’t. She’s gone.
I look around the area, spotting a can of kerosene. I turn back, looking in the direction she walked away to, right where the old wood city is, where her house is.
The idea comes back into my head, then something I said before.
“I’d let the world burn for you, if I ever had to make the choice.” After I said that I thought I had freaked her out, made her think I was crazy, but she liked it, she said it made her feel worth something. I take slow steps to the can, only to see a cart, with more cans of kerosene. I throw them on the cart, my movements slow, not precise, just slow, after all, I have burning with take all night.

The cart creaks and splashes puddles, the rain slowing down with every step, slowing down to a light drizzle, but lengthy, just like tonight. As I step into the city the wooden clock strikes 12, the sound echoing off the hollow, brittle walls of the wooden city. I make my way down the road, till I stop at an ice cream shop, our first date. I snort out a laugh, and grab a can. I unscrew the bright yellow cap, throwing it to the side, and douse the area around the shop, and set it ablaze, making my way to every place we’ve been to together, stopping at her house.
I grab the last can, throwing the yellow cap to the side as I did the hundred times before, just as she did before.
But not for long, so enough I’ll be smothered in her love.
I’ll save her.
I’ll be the hero.
I’ll be hers.
I take the match in my hand, the yells of the townspeople starting to fill the air, I flip the cap off, the rain stopping almost completely. The fire flickers at first, and I light in her house turns on, so I throw the match, and it burns, the wooden, rickety house burns, and so does the wooden city. Her screams fill my ears, and then I hear my name, she’s calling for me. She says my name over and over, her voice getting louder and more frantic. But I stand there and watch. I said I’d let the world burn for you.
But, I’ve never been true to my promises,
So,
I’ll let your world burn for me.
