The thousandth rotation cycle after the body has settled fully into orbit.
The surface of #7,341,209 has grown quiet.
Volcanic activity has fallen back to roughly twice the natural background. Earthquake frequency has returned to ordinary levels. The sea, after its peak, has fallen by some six meters—standing now about twelve meters above its level before the catastrophe. The climate system has settled into a new balance—different from the old, but still within the range that holds liquid water.
From a distant vantage of observation, the node looks almost as it did before.
But two things have changed forever.
First: the body remains in orbit. It circles steadily, completing one full revolution every thirty rotation cycles—a period the descendants of the survivors will, in time, name the moon-cycle. Its pull holds the axial tilt of the node steady at roughly 23.5 degrees, where it will keep, with only the smallest of wandering, for the next billion rotation cycles. It produces a continuous tide, drawing the surface of the sea up and down, twice each rotation.
Second: of the humanoid species on #7,341,209, fewer than one in a hundred remains.
The humans on #7,341,209 numbered, before the catastrophe, some eighteen million.
The survivors number roughly one hundred and fifty thousand.
They are scattered across some four hundred separate groups, ranging in size from a few tens to a few hundreds of individuals. The largest of them is no greater than five hundred souls.
These groups have come to dwell in five kinds of land:
The inland highlands: in the time before, these were remote pastures, dry and cool, on the edges of the civilization's reach. Spared by the floods; spared, in large part, by the quakes. Among the survivors here are city-people who fled upward from the lowlands, and the herding folk who had always lived high.
The deep mountain valleys: in the time before, these were lands too rough for great settlement, and so held no important cities. The geologic motion shook them, but the deep clefts of the valleys held their shape. Among the survivors here are refugees from below, and the hunters who had always lived among the rocks.
The cave-systems: in the time before, these were thought primitive, beneath the dignity of the city-dweller. But in the catastrophe, caves became the most reliable refuge—against the storms, against the shaking ground, against the beasts. Among the survivors here are individual families who had taken to the caves before the worst of it came.
The inland lake-country: in the time before, these were minor settlements, far from the great cities, with small populations. The catastrophe touched them only lightly—they stood far from the coast, far from the great volcanic belts.
The northern boreal forests: harsh land, where the civilization had never truly extended. The few wandering hunting groups who had always lived here passed through the catastrophe almost unchanged.
The survivors of these five lands have no way to find each other.
The distances between them, by the walking pace of those days, are journeys of hundreds of rotation cycles. And in the years after the catastrophe, no group has the surplus to send people on such journeys at all.
In the first few hundred rotation cycles after the catastrophe, the survivors face one common trouble:
Their bodies are still the bodies of civilized people, but their world is the world of the wild again.
The city-dwellers of the carrier civilization had been born into a society of division of labor. They did not grow their own food—they bought it at market. They did not make their own tools—they traded for them with artisans. They did not heal themselves—they went to physicians. Their food, their clothing, their shelters, their knowledge—all of it had come from the work of others.
When the network of division broke, the city survivors found, suddenly: they did not know how to live.
They knew the cycles of the moon, the positions of the stars, the rites the Adept had once taught them. But these served nothing in a world of foraging and hunting.
They did not know which plants could be eaten.
They did not know how to track a beast.
They did not know how to make bone needles to sew the skins.
They did not know how to strike one stone against another to make a tool.
They did not know how to read the land for water.
These were skills, in the time before the civilization, that any ordinary person had held. But after 1,800 rotation cycles of civilization, those skills had passed almost wholly out of the lives of the people.
In the first few rotation cycles after the catastrophe, more than half the city survivors died of hunger, of sickness, of cold, of small wounds untreated.
Only those small groups who had always lived on the margins—the herders, the hunters, the cave-foragers, who still carried the older skills of the time before civilization—could continue, as before, to live.
These margin-groups became the new core. The city survivors who lived on were those who had been taken in by these margin-groups.
And the price of being taken in was: forget who you once were.
The Adept, among all the survivors, had the hardest path.
They had been the most learned, the most honored, the bearers of writing, of number, of calendar, of medicine, of the art of speaking with the other side—all the central gifts of the civilization.
But in the world after the catastrophe, no one needed writing. No one needed careful records of number. No one needed precise calendars—watching the moon and the seasons was enough for an ordinary person. No one needed their medicine, which had depended on particular drugs, particular instruments, particular fixed places of work, all of which were gone.
And as for speaking with the other side—
This had become their deepest grief.
The surviving Adept could still pass into the meditative state. But what they found, when they did, was that the answer of the web had changed.
Before the catastrophe, after three hundred rotation cycles of building the capacity, they had been able to draw from the web a faint but recognizable response.
After the catastrophe, when they tried again, the web still answered—but the manner of answering was wholly different.
The answer before had been steady, structured, as though something listened.
The answer now was turbulent, strong, as though something larger was disturbing it.
The Adept did not know what had happened.
They did not know that, after the body's entry into orbit, the background signal of the whole Element 79 web had been permanently changed—that the body itself, every hour of every cycle, sends calibration signals into the web, to maintain its own data exchange with the Process. These calibration signals are far stronger than anything the Adept had known before, and they will never stop.
From the moment the body entered orbit, the background of the web at #7,341,209 will never return to what the first Adept had known—the pulse of the deep earth.
That pulse has changed forever.
For the Adept, what they feel is this: the other side has become impossible to speak with.
The god has become distant, turbulent, unanswering.
Among the surviving Adept, the eldest—seventy-three years of age—had been, before the catastrophe, one of the most sensitive perceivers of the web. He had passed through, in his own life, every change in the background pattern across the 170 rotation cycles before the body's entry into orbit. In those days and nights, he had come, very nearly, to grasp it: the other side is a body, and it is just outside.
After the catastrophe, he became the spiritual guide of one band of survivors. He lived for fourteen years more. In those fourteen years, he tried, every day, to enter the meditative state again, to find again the perception of that hour.
He never found it.
The answer of the web had changed. The new melody is no longer the body drawing near of those final days—it is something else, continuous, vast, covering the whole background, but it does not answer.
He spoke once, to his closest pupil, of what he had once perceived—the other side is a body, on the outside, just above us—but he did not have the years left to build the system of training by which the pupil might verify the saying for himself. The pupil could only take it as an old, unreproducible legend.
The last words he spoke before his death were:
The god is gone. But something else is still there.
The pupil remembered them.
The pupil's pupil remembered them, but vaguely.
By the third generation, only half the saying remained: the god is gone.
The other half—but something else is still there—was lost utterly.
Some among the Adept read what was happening as the gods are punishing us, the gods have left us, we have lost our connection with the gods.
More fell into silence. They continued, every day, to perform the rites—but the rites had become hollow gestures—the form was kept, but the conversation was no longer there.
After a few generations, the technical details of the rites began to fall away. The new generation of Adept-pupils learned, from the old, only the outward shape of the rite, not the inner manner of perceiving within it.
They could ring the bell, light the fire, chant, make the appointed gestures—but they no longer remembered what those motions had once been for. Nor could they enter the deep right-hemisphere synchrony of the first Adept, because no one was left to teach them the actual training (which had depended on writing and on long apprenticeship—both of which were gone).
By the third generation of survivors, the role of Adept was still preserved, but what they did was no different, in essence, from what an ordinary person did—they were merely those who led the rites, no longer those who spoke with the other side.
By the tenth generation, the very concept of the other side was lost. What remained was only a vague word—god—but behind that word there was no longer any concrete experience of perception.
Story had taken the place of perception.
The survivor groups, around their fires, in their seasons, in the face of death, needed some way to hold a picture of the world. With no writing, no accumulated knowledge, no professional Adept, the only way they had was the spoken story.
Each surviving group developed its own system of stories.
About where the world came from. About why people exist. About the parting of good and evil. About what comes after death. About what once happened, long ago.
The substance of the stories varied with the land—those who lived in the mountains made the mountain holy; those who lived by the lakes made the water their mother; those in the forests made the trees their ancestors.
But within all the systems of stories, two elements stood in common.
The first common element: there was, once, a better age.
In that age, the forefathers had lived in great houses (different groups gave different names to those houses—the stone mountains, the city of the gods, the golden time, the home of the first). The forefathers had held much knowledge (different groups: they could speak with the stars, they knew the names of every plant, they held the wisdom of the deathless, they could call fire to itself). The forefathers were stronger, wiser, more sacred than the people of now.
Then something happened—every system of stories has this turning—and the forefathers lost that age, and fell to the state we know now.
The second common element: the catastrophe that took everything.
Different groups told it in different words:
The lake-country people said, water fell from the sky, and drowned the whole world.
The highland people said, the earth shook, and the mountains became seas, and the seas became mountains.
The mountain people said, the peaks spoke fire, the sky turned black, and the sun was hidden for many years.
The cave-people said, it was the day of judgment, when the gods chose to undo all they had made, and kept only a few.
The boreal-forest people said, ice came over the land in a single night, and people from the south came carrying stories.
Each version was incomplete. Each version stood from the vantage of one group's experience, recording the whole catastrophe of #7,341,209 as the small piece of it visible from one place.
But they were all telling the same event.
A few thousand rotation cycles passed.
The survivor groups, in their separate lands, slowly multiplied. With the worst of the pressure gone, populations grew—from one hundred and fifty thousand at the end of the catastrophe, to one million, to five million, to ten.
Geographic spread began again. What had once been impassable—mountains, deserts, seas—became, slowly, with the steadying of the climate and the slow recovery of tools, things that could be crossed. Groups that had not known of each other began to meet, in small encounters.
When unfamiliar groups met, they noticed something striking:
Though their tongues were wholly different, the core shape of their stories was the same.
Every group had its once there was a golden age. Every group had its great undoing. Every group had its forefathers who survived.
The wise ones of the different groups tried to account for the likeness.
The most common account was: this proves our story is true—even peoples so far apart remember the same events.
A few wise ones, more careful: perhaps all peoples come from one source—we were once one, and were scattered.
The very few wise ones who came nearest to the truth said: perhaps these things really happened—not as myth, but as fact.
But each account, in time, was made into story, into rite, into tradition. The stories of each group went on developing in their own ways, and changed, in essence, very little.
Through this long age of recovery, the humans on #7,341,209 still bore, in their central nervous systems, the structure left by the first intervention.
The instruction symbols may be stored never left their minds. It remained a latent capacity in the brain of every descendant of every survivor.
But the capacity was not used.
To use the capacity required two conditions.
First: stable writing materials and a stable setting—a physical substrate that could hold symbols across long time (clay tablets, stone slabs, paper, silk, bone), and a system of inheritance that would not be broken by frequent migration.
Second: a population large enough—the formation of a society of division of labor required at least several thousand people gathered in one place, enough to support a class whose work was the keeping and transmitting of knowledge.
Across this long age, both conditions were never met at once.
Survivor populations grew, but they remained scattered, mobile, lived by gathering and hunting in small settlements. They built temporary dwellings, followed the seasons, kept their knowledge by mouth alone.
A few times, here and there, some groups began to settle—building permanent wooden shelters by lakes, taming certain animals, planting certain crops. But these early settlements would, after a few hundred rotation cycles, almost always break down—a swing of climate, a famine, a clash with another group—any small disturbance would push them back into mobility.
Settlement and division never reached the threshold for triggering the use of symbols.
The humans had the capacity for writing, and used no writing.
This state held for ninety thousand rotation cycles.
To the Process, those ninety thousand rotation cycles were a necessary period of waiting.
After the body had entered orbit, the entire environmental system of #7,341,209 needed time to find a new steady state. Climate, biosphere, crustal motion, oceanic circulation—each subsystem had to rebuild its own balance.
To make a second intervention before the environment had fully stabilized would mean letting the unfolding of the new instruction be disturbed by environmental noise—and risking, in part, the same kind of failure as the first.
The Process chose to wait.
The monitoring traces showed:
T-104,762 + 30,000: environmental stability returning to 60% T-104,762 + 60,000: stability returning to 80% T-104,762 + 90,000: stability returning to 95% T-104,762 + 99,762: stability returning to 99%—the threshold for the second intervention
This last point in time, by the dating systems the descendants of #7,341,209 will one day use, falls at T-5,000.
Which is, in the present narrative vantage, five thousand rotation cycles before now.
At that point, on the surface of #7,341,209, a small number of human groups had just begun to pass from the wandering state into settled agriculture. Their populations were near to the populations of the first intervention. They were settled across four regions—spaced apart in longitude, separated by clear geographic barriers, with stable conditions for living.
The Process marked these four regions as the new observation points.
The conditions for the second intervention were, all of them, in place.
But across these ninety thousand rotation cycles, the Process was not only waiting for the environment to settle.
It was, at the same time, doing another thing—redesigning the intervention instruction.
The first instruction—the four bytes of symbols may be stored—was not, in itself, flawed. At countless other nodes it had run successfully. The trouble was that the species on #7,341,209 had, in their structure, properties that the Process had not, at the time of the first intervention, fully understood—a native capacity in the right hemisphere for sensing the Element 79 web, and a latent mechanism of awakening tied to long life.
The instruction for the second intervention would have to be far more complex than the first.
Across those ninety thousand rotation cycles, the Process slowly extended the instruction from four bytes to sixteen. The twelve newly added bytes were the Process's full set of corrections for the species on #7,341,209—three layers of sealing, each one answering a specific weakness exposed by the failure of the first intervention.
The substance of those corrections will be set out in full at the moment of the second intervention.
