I do not think that anyone slept that night. The images of the puppy girl being dragged out of her cell as she was pleading and screaming. It was scary and like some horror film. I knew that the other two did not sleep after this drama. I could hear them crying and whimpering. I did not cry. This does not mean that I was not confused or afraid. A girl was dragged out of her cell, and this made me think of where they were taking her and what would happen to her.
Morning came and I knew that the other two puppy children knew what happened to her. They were afraid and this could be seen by the expressions on their faces and that they were shivering. I tried speaking to Andrew but he did not respond. I wondered what Andrew was like before he came here. Was he a normal boy that liked playing and having fun? Did he become so submissive when he came here? I could see that he forgot more and more about being a human as every day went by. Is this what happened to the puppy girl? Did she forget she was human and was this the reason why she was moved? It was annoying that Andrew did not respond to me. I knew that he knew something!
Ash interrupted my thoughts and told me that I was to follow him. He put a leash on me and said that the doctor wanted to see me. I did not know if I should believe him or not. Did they tell the girl that she was going to see the doctor? I did not put up a fight. I was not going to be a coward. Plus I figured that whatever it was, it could not be worse than being locked in a cell. I told Ash that there was no need for the leash. The only answer I got was to remember not to speak.
I was taken to an office. It had a sign on it to say that he was a vet. He examined me in every way he could. He asked Ash if I was still thinking like a human and talking. Ash said that I was very stubborn and not submissive, so my progress has been very slow. He did say that I ate the dog food and that I have no problems with sleeping. The vet said that I was not ready for any rewards or to be put on the market. He also suggested increasing the subliminal messages. I knew what the rewards meant. It meant that I would not get a sleeping basket or toys. I had no clue what he meant by being ready for the market or subliminal messages.
On the way back to my cell, I asked Ash a lot of questions. What was the Vet talking about and what happened to the girl that was dragged from her cell? Ash told me that I did not have to worry about those things. Life would be much better if I accepted that I was a puppy. It would be best if I submitted to it. I told Ash that it was strange that he could not see that I was also human and why would I want to forget this side of me. Ash sighed and told me that he now let me speak too much. He thought that it was best that he enforced the rule that I must no longer speak. This was hard for me to hear. I thought that Ash was sympathetic, but now I was doubting that.

“I do not know,” Andrew replied, “Some say that the children are taken to an island where we can live in peace. I also heard that the doctor experiments on them. I will be taken away soon, and I will be honest, I am afraid.”
Nothing more was said. Ash came and started yelling. He told us that we were warned not to speak. As a punishment, we would get no food. If he caught us speaking again, we would be sent to “the pit”. I think Ash could see how confused I was. He told me that the pit was the worst place that I could be sent to. It was worse than hell. I turned my back to Ash. This was my way of showing him that I no longer trusted him.
I had a lot of time to think. Andrew was afraid that he would be taken next. Images of Andrew on a hospital bed and being dissected by the doctor. It made shivers go through my mind. Where was Dad? Was he and my mom looking for me? How could they look for me? Everyone would think they were crazy when they said that I was a boy with dog ears and a tail. They could never tell the police. They could also be ashamed of me. What parent would want a mutant puppy child?
I was hungry and afraid of the future. I was crying on the straw. There seemed to be no hope. My thoughts and self-pity were interrupted once again by some commotion. The men from yesterday came back and was removing the puppy boy who was in the cell next to Andrew. The boy was barking and screaming. I thought I would hear him pleading, but he was now so brainwashed, that he no longer knew how to talk. He was doing his best to kick and fight. This did not help. He was dragged out by the leash. After he was dragged out, there was silence. It was only Andrew and me left. I could hear Andrew crying and praying that he would not be experimented with by some mad doctor.
I spent most of the night crying. When Ash came, he asked me why I was crying. I just looked up at him and asked him how could he work at this place. Why did this place want us to forget our human side? Could we not be proud that we had the best of being a human and canine? The fact is that I would never be a puppy as I could not forget my human side. What this place was doing was bad and unethical. I asked him once again how could he have a good conscience and be happy working here. What would his mother think? I could see that Ash went pale. He said nothing and just walked away.
later, I tried to sleep. My mind was in so many places. I wondered if Andrew would be taken when it was dark. I wondered if Mom or Dad was looking for me. Mom would not be looking for me. She wanted to send me here. This meant that I had to depend on Dad. I knew that once he was better, he would come and save me.
As my eyes were closed, I heard a familiar voice coming from the outside. It sounded like my best friend Catherine. She was telling me not to give up hope and I needed to find a way to escape. She continued to tell me to remember who I am and not to let this place change me. “Do not trust these people,” she said, “I will be waiting for you”
It was Catherine's voice, but it could not be her. It must be a voice in my head which meant that I was slowly going crazy. Still, it was true what was being said. I had to be proud of who I was and not let anyone change me or make me think that I was just an animal that belonged in a cage. I needed to fight back and show them that I was both human and a dog.
I crawled over to Andrew and whispered what my thoughts were. I told him if we submitted to these people and let them change us, then they would just take us away like they did with the other children. I did not want to be experimented on. The best way to do this was to cause trouble. To show these people that we would no longer be their pets. We had rights and it was time they could see that.
So we started barking and shouting. We took our dog bowls and banged them against the bars. We talked loudly to each other and even started to sing songs. Ash came and told us to calm down and be quiet. We just laughed at him and made more noise. The old doctor and strange vet suddenly came. The vet managed to give Andrew a shot. This made Andrew slump to the floor. He was out like a light. Then the three men looked at me. The doctor said that he knew that it was my fault. The vet said it is a waste of time to protest or try to fight them. The sooner that I accepted I was not human, the better.
The old doctor ordered Ash to take me to the pit.
The pit was a deep hole in the ground outside, I could sit down, but that was about it. I could not lay down. Even when I sat, it was in a puddle of cold water. It was dark and cold. When it rained, then I would become drenched. I was told no food. As I was being dragged to the pit, I could hear the doctor tell the vet that this would break my spirit. I started to believe that this would happen as well. As I sat in the pit, All I could think about was how cold and wet I was. I was hungry and tired. I felt that the men in this place had no heart or compassion. Even if I was just a puppy, this was abuse at the highest. I cried a lot which gave me headaches.
When I was giving up all hope, I saw the small figure of Ash through the bars at the top of the pit. He lowered some chicken legs on a string. I ate them like a savage. I could hear Ash say that he was not as evil as I said he was. I did not answer. If he wanted to be nice, then he could help me escape.
I do not know how long I was there. I tried to be positive by singing and talking to myself. I even started to think that this must have been what it was like when a child fell down a well. They must have been so afraid as I was now.
After a long time being there, I heard a familiar voice. I looked up towards the bars that covered the pit. It hurt my eyes as they were now so used to the darkness, the sunlight heard them. I did recognise the voice and the face looking down at me.
It was my mother!
